Which certification should I choose: SUP, SUP Yoga, SUP Fitness, or all three?
The best option depends on the types of lessons and classes you plan to offer. You can also take this training to earn continuing education credits (CECs) from ACE, NASM, AFAA, CanFitPro, or Yoga Alliance, even if you do not plan to start a business or teach paddleboarding.
SUP Certification is ideal if you want to teach stand-up paddleboarding lessons. You’ll develop your paddling and teaching skills along with stroke technique, turns, water safety, rescue techniques, and how to introduce beginners to the sport.
SUP Yoga Certification includes SUP certification plus specialized training in teaching yoga on a paddleboard. You’ll learn how to adapt your teaching to the water, modify poses, and lead our Gentle Wave and Nautical Flow classes.
SUP Fitness Certification includes SUP certification plus specialized training in paddleboard fitness. You’ll learn to combine paddling, functional exercise, interval training, and progressive programming through our Surfer’s Sculpt and Advanced SUP classes.
The Complete SUP Certification Package includes all three: SUP, SUP Yoga, and SUP Fitness. It’s a great choice if you want the flexibility to offer paddleboarding lessons, yoga classes, fitness sessions, racing technique, and a wider range of workshops.
Do I need to purchase SUP certification separately if I enroll in SUP Yoga or SUP Fitness?
No—SUP certification is included with every certification option. You don't need to buy it separately or enroll in a separate SUP course first. Paddling skills and water safety are essential whether you plan to teach paddleboarding, yoga, or fitness. That’s why every pathway begins with the SUP foundation before moving into your chosen specialty. Choose SUP Yoga if you want SUP and yoga training, SUP Fitness if you want SUP and fitness training, or the Complete Package if you want all three.
What is the difference between SUP Yoga and SUP Fitness?
SUP Yoga adapts a yoga practice to the paddleboard. Training covers positioning, balance, transitions, modifications, sequencing, and teaching students with different experience levels. Our signature classes include Gentle Wave, a gentle, beginner-friendly practice, and Nautical Flow, a Vinyasa-inspired class with more dynamic sequences.
SUP Fitness uses the paddleboard and surrounding environment for exercise and conditioning. Training includes functional movement, intervals, paddling technique, and progressive workouts. Surfer’s Sculpt combines beach and water-based exercise, while Advanced SUP introduces more advanced paddling, race skills, starts, finishes, and conditioning.
Both specialties include the SUP certification, so you’ll also learn to teach paddleboarding lessons and water safety on Day 1.
What will I learn in the Complete SUP Certification Package?
The Complete Package combines technical paddling skills, water safety, teaching practice, yoga, fitness, and business education. You’ll work on efficient paddle mechanics, board handling, advanced turns, rescue skills, emergency scenarios, and risk management. You’ll also learn about equipment selection and how to teach our Beginner Lesson, Gentle Wave, Nautical Flow, Surfer’s Sculpt, and Advanced SUP formats. The package includes our 12-Week Intro to SUP Fitness program, which gives you a structured approach to progressing beginner clients, plus a Business Workshop to help you develop and market your offerings.
Is the certification online or in person?
Our certifications combine self-paced online learning with in-person training and a practical water skills assessment. You’ll begin by reading the course manual, watching instructional videos, and completing quizzes through the online learning portal. This allows you to study and practice before your in-person training. The on-water portion gives you an opportunity to apply what you’ve learned, practice teaching, receive feedback, and demonstrate your skills.
Can I start the online coursework before my training date?
Yes! Once your application and payment are complete, you’ll receive access to the online learning portal so you can begin preparing. Starting early gives you time to review the material and practice on the water. You can also submit videos for personalized feedback from Gillian before your practical assessment.
How much paddleboarding experience should I have?
We recommend at least one year of stand-up paddleboarding experience. You should feel comfortable participating in water sports and be ready to develop your paddling technique, safety skills, and ability to guide others. You must also be a proficient swimmer who can swim at least 25 yards. If you’re unsure whether your experience is a good fit, contact us before enrolling so we can help you determine how to prepare.
Do I need to be a yoga teacher to take SUP Yoga certification?
We strongly encourage participants to have completed a 200-hour yoga teacher training. If you haven’t completed it yet, you should be enrolled in a program or planning to begin one soon. SUP Yoga training teaches you how to bring yoga instruction onto the water. Your foundational yoga teacher training provides the broader knowledge of teaching, alignment, and sequencing that supports this specialty. We do not recommend teaching SUP Yoga until you complete your 200-hour yoga teacher training.
Do I need a personal training or group fitness certification to take SUP Fitness?
A primary fitness certification is not required to apply, but we strongly recommend a nationally recognized, NCCA-accredited fitness credential, such as ACE, ACSM, NSCA, or NASM. We also recommend at least one year of fitness instruction or coaching experience. If you haven’t earned a primary fitness certification, you should be actively studying for one or planning to obtain one within the next 12 months. We do not recommend teaching SUP Fitness until you have earned that credential. Instructors with experience teaching fitness yoga formats such as Yoga Sculpt, Yoga Pilates, or Power Yoga are also encouraged to apply.
Do I need CPR, AED, and First Aid certification?
Yes. You must provide proof of current CPR, AED, and First Aid certification before we can issue your Paddle Into Fitness certification. You can still attend training if you haven’t completed these credentials yet, but you’ll need to submit them before receiving your certification.
Do I need to own a paddleboard or bring equipment?
No. SUP rental equipment is included for the in-person training. You’re also welcome to bring your own board and equipment if you prefer. During the course, you’ll learn about boards, paddles, fins, anchors, accessories, and other equipment so you can make informed choices when planning your own lessons or classes.
